Another school shooting ends in death, injuries

St. Mary's, MD - A student police say was a school gunman has died following a shootout with a police resource officer. Austin Wyatt Rollins, 17, allegedly opened fire and critically wounded a 14-year-old boy and 16-year-old girl at a Maryland high school. Rollins died at the scene. Authorities aren't saying if he shot himself or if he was shot by the police officer stationed at the school. Media reports credit the officer with shooting Rollins, but this is still unconfirmed.

The shooting happened just after classes started at Great Mills High School around 8:15 a.m. St Mary's County Sheriff Tim Cameron said that the shooter pulled out a handgun and shot a teen girl before being injured himself in an exchange of fire with the resource officer. A male student was also hit by a bullet. The resource officer was not injured in the shooting. All three victims were transported to MedStar in St. Mary's.

It's unclear if there was a relationship between the shooter and the two victims, Sheriff Cameron said.

Sheriff Cameron did not say exactly how the shooter was killed.

The shooting comes as many students across the country are calling for effective gun controls, leading up to Saturday’s March For Our Lives rally in the nation’s capital against gun violence in schools.
